Halifax, as the Capital, with a population of 370,000, is a perfect blend of the past and present.  A significant port city since its founding in 1749, the waterfront is a delightful area of museums, boutiques and restaurants, galleries, historic landmarks and a wonderful boardwalk for strolling.  A lively City at night, it is famous for its local music and many pubs and restaurants.  You can take a boat tour of the Harbour of visit the Halifax Citadel which is a meticulously restored 1800s fortress complete with soldiers performing musket drills and hear the boom of the noon-day cannon.

There are many parks in Halifax and lots of opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, whether strolling through the Public Gardens or jogging the trails at Point Pleasant Park or the Shubie Canal.

The Halifax Regional Municipality consists of Peninsular Halifax which can be approached over water by two bridges and a passenger ferry, or by land from the western 'neck' of the peninsula. (Highway #102, Bedford Highway and Armdale Rotary).  The Downtown area contains most of the business district with Universities located in the South end.  All of the South, West and North ends of the City are residential as well.

On the other side of the Harbour we have the old City of Dartmouth, the 'City of Lakes', which has a small downtown area but is predominantly residential.  These two 'old' Cities of Halifax and Dartmouth are  surrounded by the mostly residential areas known as Bedford, the Mainland South, Sackville and Lawrencetown/Porters* Lake areas.

Wherever you choose to live, you are never far from the beautiful ocean beaches, lakes, parks and many activities that abound at the heart of the Province!  Welcome to Halifax!
